Very insightful - I previously didn't think about transfer payments likely because the government wants to cover up this dirty statistical trick... so they can "fight poverty" and redistribute more.

Thanks for the thoughtful and nuance discussion.

The United States puts a lot of money towards fighting poverty, and it often seems like we aren’t solving the real root causes.

Thomas Sowell VIDEO which I failed to include with my initial posting :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLKpuzoFwfs

Watch THIS and others by him for a true picture of how WELFARE [ or vote buying ] can easily and quickly distort and radicalise a community , no matter HOW WEALTHY THEY HAVE BECOME !

That last fact is the clincher ! Two thirds of the "poor" were gainfully employed , then welfare

and the rules and regulations around receiving welfare intervened , now only one third are gainfully employed and two thirds are "receiving welfare" and no longer need to work , because they are being paid NOT to work ! Ayn Rand held that belief long ago !

I think that Thomas Sowell has made that point so often that this is NOT new or news , although he was mainly looking at the situation as it related to "black people" , and in particular , how the intrusion of welfare had resulted in the destruction of families and the promotion of un-married mothers and alienated fathers ! So much so ,that illegitimate children are now the vast majority and "broken homes" are the norm ! How sad that people THINK mental problems dominate when the cause of most of the problems is ill-advised and destructive WELFARE and ideology disguised as "compassion".

It also drives the [mis] education system and the curricula that has enshrined Marxist values while failing to enlighten about Marxist failures and their fatal consequences !
