"Unlike foreign aid, remittances don’t cost US taxpayers a dime."

I'm going to have to call BS on that one. You are looking only at taxes collected for foreign aid, and not the economic impact of immigrants being here and making money here.

The vast majority of remittances come from illegal aliens who are working under the table, not paying taxes, and taking jobs from and lowering wages for American workers. These illegals are simultaneous collecting welfare, using Medicaid, sending their kids to public schools, crowding our ERs for minor ailments because they refuse to get a primary care doctor, getting food stamps (yes, I know it's a card now), getting WIC, living in public housing (or being put up in hotels at taxpayer expense), often being given cash payments, voting in our elections, popping out anchor babies, and probably doing other things I have no idea about. Their remittances are costing US taxpayers a almost unfathomable amount.

But I do agree that the money they send back is more effective than anything government does. Or charities either. And it is directed more appropriately. Government and charities are the most corrupt things in the world. Only a fraction of any government aid or charity money actually goes to help the people it is purported to be for.

I would much rather end all foreign aid and not tax remittances, or anything else. But at the same time we should end ALL social programs. Let those who want to work hard and/or smart and make a better life do what they want with their money, immigrant or not. For those who want to sponge off the system and our charitable natures and not contribute, they can starve or leave or change their ways. Immigrant or not.

Oh if the world was so simple as we try to make it! I enjoy your articles for the alternative ways of life and they are a great respite from the regular " news". Unfortunately you seem to give human nature more credit than it deserves.

Humans are broken and broken things cannot fix broken things. There is only one true answer to our problems and yet so many reject Him.

You bring up some excellent points.

Confirms for me the inartfulness that imbues foreign aid. This tax would only be fair for non-taxpaying residents, whether legal or not.

Italy was a prosperous country during two major periods: from roughly 1300 to 1600 during the Renaissance, when it led Europe in manufacturing, banking, and trade, and in the post-World War II era, between the late 1950s and the late 1960s during the Italian economic miracle (il miracolo economico), when it became a major industrial power.

Argentina was a highly prosperous nation during a period lasting from roughly the 1880s to the early 1910s, reaching its peak in 1895 when it had the world's highest GDP per capita.........however, its economic position deteriorated significantly after the 1930s .

Key Economic Powers in 1900 :

United States: The US had undergone rapid industrialization and was emerging as the dominant economic power, exceeding the UK's GDP by this time.

British Empire: Having been the leading economic and industrial nation for much of the 19th century, the UK remained a major global economic player with extensive colonial territories.

Germany: A united Germany under Prussian leadership experienced rapid economic growth, becoming the largest economy in Europe and a leader in key industries like chemicals and steel.

France: France also maintained its status as a major power with a significant global empire, though it was not as dominant as the US or British Empire in economic terms.

MY POINT BEING THAT "EVERY DOG HAS IT'S DAY".......and SO DOES EACH COUNTRY...........................

EVEN AFRICA , THE MIDDLE-EAST and ASIA including INDIA , CHINA and MONGOLIA !

"The United Nations (UN) was established in 1945 to maintain international peace and security, prevent future wars, foster friendly relations among nations, and achieve international cooperation in solving economic, social, cultural, and humanitarian problems. Its creation followed the devastation of World War II, with the central mission of creating conditions for lasting peace and promoting universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms."

The UN is a total failure ! .........It has become a corrupt marxist morass intent on destroying the WESTERN WORLD and WESTERN CULTURE and accreting TOTAL POWER to itself by promoting

internationalist ideologies [ like "Catastrophic Climate Change" ] through the IPCC etc. ....and only functions BECAUSE the WEST provides it with the necessary funding ! ........Total hypocrisy !

......................................................................................................................................................................................................

It is now 2025 ........and the whole world STILL holds it's hand out to AMERICA for aid !

.......................................................................................................................................................................................................

Personally , I think that 80 years is sufficient time for "THE WORLD" to get it's collective-act together and for the WEST to step back , stop the welfare and allow them to get off their "sofas" ,

put in a little effort and accept SOME RESPONSIBILITY for their own lives !

I don't mean adopting an ISOLATIONIST POLICY , I do mean "allowing them the room and the necessity to grow into RESPONSIBLE , SELF-SUFFICIENT ENTITIES " !

If they then threaten that their LOYALTIES will go elsewhere , then fine ! They were NEVER your FRIEND or your ALLY in the first place !............Let their NEW ALLIES pick-up the burden !

[ If it's the ally that I am thinking of , it won't take them long to look elsewhere again !!! ]

.....................................................................................................................................................................................................

As for TAXING the "remittances" , I think that IT WOULD BE BEST NOT TO TAX THEM as long

as you DISCONTINUE ALL THE FOREIGN AID and give the American TAXPAYERS a "fair break" !

They deserve it ! [ Then "they" MIGHT consider withdrawing all the WELFARE that is currently destroying the initiative and independence of their OWN " welfare dependent citizens "........ as recommended by Thomas Sowell !!!!

This issue gets mixed up with immigration policy. Legal immigrants are mostly likely paying taxes so charging a tax on their remittances is probably not a good idea. But what about illegal immigrants who, if working, are probably not paying taxes? To discourage illegal immigration perhaps they should be taxed on remittances.
