One problem is that successful innovation tends to generate wealth, which attracts those who want to take it by force.

Another problem is that once innovation has made some people successful, they don't want to risk further disruptive innovation endangering their new position.

I think Mancur Olsen’s take on the issue might add value as well. He believes that rent-seeking coalitions pursue privileged positions that disrupt institutions — locking in incumbents and locking out new challengers and innovation.
