One problem is that successful innovation tends to generate wealth, which attracts those who want to take it by force.

Another problem is that once innovation has made some people successful, they don't want to risk further disruptive innovation endangering their new position.

I think Mancur Olsen’s take on the issue might add value as well. He believes that rent-seeking coalitions pursue privileged positions that disrupt institutions — locking in incumbents and locking out new challengers and innovation.

Personally , Chelsea , I have seen and embraced new ideas all my life.........except now.

I find that 'innovations' now-days tend more towards LOSS OF FREEDOM .

The cell-phone was supposed to liberate people , increase connectivity and socialisation [ I hasten to emphasise .....not socialism ! ] . Instead , it has enslaved people ! They literally can't exist or live in this world without it ! It is their 'phone , their camera , their alarm clock , their banking system , their

business , their memory , their reference book , their proof of identity , and occasionally , their social contact with others . It is indeed , a constant EXPENSE and yet , their Raison d'etre ! ...............

It interrupts everything and anything despite requests to "turn off your mobile 'phones please ! " I think it is but one of many such CONVENIENCES which are actually INCONVENIENCES if only we would admit it ! Banking is now a nightmare : Security systems control our every attempt to carry out straight-forward processes .....we allow a machine to dictate whether or not we can access our own money ! Fail any one of several steps and you are left bereft !

Modern people make fun of people in the past who relied on talismans or oracles or the Bible for guidance ! What will people in the future make of today's addicts and their status symbol 'phones ?

And even worse , nobody actually understands them ....they just use them.....and surveillance people track-your-location and 'robots' track your areas of interest and your spending patterns and target you with specific advertising....and all the collected information is "shared with third parties" [ did you NOT read the small-print ? Too bad anyway , because to get a 'phone you have to sign it anyway , and then you can start to LIVE IN THE MODERN WORLD ! Oh ! Joy ! Because you sure as Hell can't live without it ! . ] Yep ! It is no wonder that innovation comes and goes ! Personally ,

I would prefer that BANKS still operated with STAFF [ Employees : People that is ! } and MONEY and CHEQUES rather than "touch and go" transfers of small patterns of electrons etc......and the complete dehumanisation of every transaction !

Sooner or later , people become fed-up and disillusioned with THIS kind of "progress" , revolt and create a new and FREER LIFE STYLE , hopefully , but often just enjoy living in a declining civilisation

as it collapses about them [ e.g. The Romans , and The Greeks before them , and the Egyptians and Sumerians even earlier ! ] Ah ! We live in interesting times do we not !?
