Trade is the ultimate peacekeeper. Another reason I take issue with policymakers who attempt to use tariffs in the name of national security.
It’s ironic that, in times of war, one of the best paths to winning is to cut one’s enemies off from trade routes. Yet, today, many policymakers reverse this logic, claiming that cutting oneself off from trade routes somehow makes one's nation strong. Now you have tariffs on steel, aluminum, copper, cars, and even kitchen cabinets, being enacted in the name of national security.
Then, to cap it all, these trade restrictions actually raise the likelihood of conflict, as I wrote:
A study by Solomon Polachek and Carlos Seiglie found that with every doubling of trade volume between nations, the probability of belligerence fell by about 20 percent. This finding is robust, holding across different cultures and political systems. More than any other factor, trade promotes human flourishing and peace on Earth.
Hi J K ! You also wrote the very interesting article below , with which I entirely agree !
"Devalued Dreams"
How the education system wastes our time, money, and talent.
.
In fact I would extend that even further : Education has now been deliberately replaced by indoctrination , too many useless ideas [ and subjects] are being "taught"
[ OR.......should that be " tort" : 'A tort is a civil wrong, other than a breach of contract, that causes harm to another person, their property, or their reputation.' ????]
in useless 'dead-end' subjects , leaving nothing but doubts , debts and depression !
Not only are the ideas harmful , they are intended to be ! The teaching of Marxism and other ideas designed to impair or destroy "our" Capitalist System , Individualism and Free Enterprise is now open-slather ! It seems calculated to retard personal development , initiative and Western-Cultural norms and aspirations. It encourages the worst aspects of human nature : covetousness , laziness , division , feelings of guilt , resentment and unjustifiable 'entitlement', often couched in terms like "generational inequity" which are so vague and without any realistic basis ; and instead of encouraging and producing competent , happy , 'graduates' , keen and eager to engage in an exciting career and a wonderful future , "we" are having hostile , incompetent , angry "activists" dumped on us in ever increasing numbers and with ever diminishing employment avenues or success rates !.
.
While "we" are being undermined socially and intellectually by the very existence of the institutes of "Academe" [ which are failing "us" and the students while proving to be a financial bottomless pit !! ] and which , in the past , were so venerable and valuable ,
the very IDENTITY of WESTERN CULTURE and ACHIEVEMENT is being destroyed by the
very institutions "we" relied upon to extend and project "our values" into the future ;
it is time to dismantle the abysmal curricula and rebuild it FIT FOR A DECENT FUTURE !
.
International TRADE and FREE ENTERPRISE and CAPITALISM and INDIVIDUAL FREEDOM and PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY all need a thorough overhaul and revision and revitalisation !
Until "we" get our values and priorities BACK ON TRACK then "we" will continue to fall and to fail ; UNTIL the EDUCATION SYSTEM OVERHAUL , REPLACEMENT and RADICAL CURRICULM IMPROVEMENT is carried out , and PROSPEROUS , INNOVATIVE and PRODUCTIVE ENTERPRISES are created , then all the "well-meaning" policies [ which are consuming vast amounts of money and resources ] will IMPOVERISH and destroy our AUSTRALIAN ENTERPRISE and SOCIETY . This is urgently needed !
.
Trade and Tariffs are trifling matters by comparison.........although.....as I said.......I concur
with the thrust of your argument.......I think "we" need to take action DOMESTICALLY !
Great work Human Progres
