Call me cynical , BUT , this "cascade of Mental Illness" is coincident with the "cascade in diagnosis of gender-dysphoria" and the "cascade in the NEED for ever more FUNDING for ever more psychologists and psychiatrists " and "the cascade of homelessness" and yet , it is strangely at odds with the CLOSURE of mental institutions which used to 'harbour and protect many of these people' from the suffering and hardship of said "mental illness" !
The "Art" of Healing: Mental illnesses are subjective experiences. Unlike oncology or cardiology, there are no blood or imaging tests that can definitively diagnose depression or anxiety for every individual. Because of this, treatment often involves trial-and-error and requires the practitioner to use "phronesis" (practical wisdom) and intuition to find what works........fortunately though....... "The field is actively evolving with developments in Precision Psychiatry, a rapidly growing area that aims to utilize neuroimaging, genomics, and biomarkers to make diagnoses much more exact."...............IF you can accept "much more exact" as a "scientific term"......which it isn't !!!!
So....it will STILL BE DOWN TO INTUITION , but more expensive probably....to pay for all the tests !

"But much of the supposed surge in mental illness can be explained by a broadening of the American Psychiatric Association’s diagnostic criteria in recent decades and financial incentives for diagnosing more." and "Adding a prescription is the fastest, most reimbursable response at every stage of care." and "When the National Institute of Mental Health says that half of all American adolescents have experienced mental illness, that isn’t psychiatry advancing as a field. It’s the result of various incentives for pathologizing ordinary struggle."

The overall prevalence of mental illness in Australia closely mirrors that of the United States.
Both nations are among the highest in the world for mental health needs, with population-wide diagnosis rates sitting in the high teens to low twenties. THAT ALONE IS AN INDICATION THAT IT IS TIME TO RE-EVALUATE THE ENTIRE PROCESS........from diagnosis through to 'drugs' !

ADDITIONALLY : Is it NOT TIME TO CHANGE THE CURRICULUM to direct "people" into TRADES where they can usefully and beneficially occupy their time and improve society , and
AWAY FROM academic pursuits which churn-out-an-over-abundance-of-professional-problem-seekers-but-not-problem-resolvers ?
To what extent are changing demographics, especially among the young, affecting diagnoses and treatment of psychiatric problems? "Americans" is a catch-all, useful for some analyses (e.g. economic, environmental), less so for others.
