• An analysis from Brookings finds that the net price of college (i.e., “the sticker price minus scholarships and grants”) in the United States has fallen substantially in recent years, particularly for poorer students attending elite private institutions.

• Around the world, rising crop yields are allowing agricultural land to be returned to nature, but how long does it take for that land to regain a wild, abundant equilibrium? A recently published study in Ecuador’s Chocó rainforest found that recovery can happen fairly rapidly. After analyzing abandoned agricultural land at different phases of recovery, the researchers estimated that within 30 years, the land regained over 90 percent of the abundance and species diversity found in old-growth forests, and about 75 percent of their species composition.

• Another rainforest study finds that the Amazon may be more drought-resistant than previously assumed. The researchers argue that most studies of Amazon drought response focus on forests where groundwater lies deep underground, making them more vulnerable to lower levels of rainfall. Their study instead examined forests with shallow water tables—which make up a third of the Amazon—and found that even during a severe drought, tree mortality did not increase and tree biomass continued to rise.

• Thanks to habitat restoration efforts, Central California Coast coho salmon have enjoyed a run of fruitful spawning migrations. In 2025, 30,000 adult salmon returned to Mendocino Coast rivers to breed, up from 15,000 the year before and 3,000 a decade ago.

• Quaise Energy, a geothermal power company, has announced it is building a prototype “superhot” geothermal power plant in Oregon. Their key innovation is a novel drilling technique that uses microwaves to break rock instead of drill bits. • Fervo Energy, another geothermal developer, appears to be scaling up. The company recently ordered turbines totaling 1.7 gigawatts of capacity, enough to support dozens of standardized power plants.

The biggest remaining barriers are political; many governments don’t want their citizens to enjoy unfettered access to the internet, or for their domestic service providers to have to compete with foreign firms. In Argentina, where such a ban was recently lifted, two million people have connected to Starlink, many of whom live in remote areas of the country.

• A recent paper finds that AI models can outperform humans at fact-checking social media posts. After generating over 1,600 AI-written Community Notes on X, researchers compared them with human-written notes on the same posts and found that the AI notes were rated as more helpful by both left- and right-leaning users.

  • The Netherlands Vehicle Authority has become the first European regulator to approve Tesla’s supervised self-driving software, commenting that “Proper use of this driver assistance system makes a positive contribution to road safety.” Seems especially notable coming from the world’s foremost cycling nation.

• The New York State Department of Health has determined that, thanks to a reduction in water pollution—namely, declining levels of toxic polychlorinated biphenyl compounds (PCBs)—certain fish species in the lower Hudson River are now safe to eat in moderation.

• Conservationists in Zambia are using synthetic furs to reduce leopard poaching. An important festival of Zambia’s Lozi people involves dressing up in leopard skins. Rather than trying to end the practice, the cat conservation non-profit Panthera Corporation began distributing ultra-realistic synthetic pelts. According to a recently published study of the program, the fake furs were rapidly adopted by the Lozi and were followed by a drop in poaching incidents and a rise in leopard sightings by camera traps.

• The ampurta, a formerly endangered carnivorous marsupial found in Australia, has rebounded in recent years, expanding its range by an area the size of Denmark between 2015 and 2021. Researchers credit some of the resurgence to the 1995 release of rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus, which wiped out large numbers of invasive rabbits in Australia and thereby reduced the population of feral cats and foxes, major predators of the ampurta.

• In a small trial in China, a single-injection gene therapy improved hearing in all ten congenitally deaf participants. One even gained near-normal hearing within just four months.

• The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that traffic deaths in the US were 6.7 percent lower in 2025 than in 2024, reaching the second-lowest death rate per mile traveled ever recorded.

• US pedestrian deaths were 10.9 percent lower in the first half of 2025 than in the same period a year earlier, though they remained slightly above the 2019 level.

• A new CRISPR gene-editing technique could make it much easier to engineer staple crops. Using a refined CRISPR enzyme they call CasY7, researchers from the South China Agricultural University were able to edit rice and maize genomes 2.7 times more efficiently than a typical CRISPR system, potentially speeding up the development of higher-yielding, more resilient crops.

• UNESCO recently published an encouraging report on access to education around the world. It finds that 1.4 billion students were enrolled in school in 2024, 30 percent more than in 2000. Over the same period, the global “out-of-school rate,” which measures the share of appropriately aged children who are not enrolled in primary or secondary school, fell from 27.2 percent to 16.8 percent. Unfortunately, the report also notes that enrollment progress has stagnated over the past decade.

• A large psychology study finds that we consistently underestimate other people’s honesty. Across 11 experiments involving more than 8,000 participants, volunteers completed tasks where they could lie anonymously for personal gain—for example, by falsely claiming they guessed a die roll correctly to win money—and were also asked to estimate how many others would lie in the same situation. On average, participants overestimated the share of people who would lie by about 14 percentage points.

• The Metropolitan Museum of Art has begun adding highly detailed 3D models of artworks and artifacts to its website, letting online users inspect the objects from every angle. They also added an augmented reality feature for smartphones that allows you to interact with the virtual objects at their true scale, say by “walking through” the model of the Temple of Dendur.

• The US Federal Aviation Administration has announced a set of pilot projects for a new species of aircraft. Most will test eVTOLs, or small, electric, drone-like aircraft that take off and land vertically rather than using a runway. • The United States Supreme Court has ruled that President Trump lacked the authority to impose widespread tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. • Elephant seals are no longer considered “near threatened” in South Africa after their population reached 5,500 in 2023, up from 3,000 in 2016.

• After being driven to the brink of extinction in Serbia in the late 20th century, the eastern imperial eagle—which graces the national coat of arms—has been reestablished in the country, with 19 breeding pairs recorded in 2025.

• The cheetah is back in India, and its population is growing. In 2022, conservationists began reintroducing the species using animals from Namibia and South Africa. As of this week, the wild population has risen to 38.

• US companies are trying to repurpose jet engines into natural gas turbines to power data centers. According to a Jefferies analyst, about 1,600 commercial jet engines are retired each year, and if a third were converted, they could yield roughly 13 gigawatts of generating capacity.

• The blogger Scott Alexander has assembled some arguments for why we should take the long term decline in US crime rates seriously:

  • The National Crime Victimization Survey, which asks people directly whether they have been victims of crime and operates independently of police reports, shows a broadly similar long-run decline to other crime measures.

  • Homicide and motor-vehicle theft, which are consistently reported and reliably measured, have dropped at similar rates to other crimes.

• Argentina’s Senate has approved a major labor reform bill that loosens rules around hiring and firing and curbs union power. The bill still has to pass through the lower house, but the Senate—where President Milei’s party, La Libertad Avanza, holds a smaller share of seats—was the larger hurdle. As policy analyst Marcos Falcone recently discussed on our podcast, labor reform is a crucial step toward fixing the Argentine economy:

Argentina also has a very high degree of informality in its labor market because it’s very expensive to hire employees legally, and it can be even more expensive to let them go because of litigation. Businesses, particularly small and medium enterprises, are constantly trying to avoid litigation because they know, due to the way that the judicial system is set up, if they face a lawsuit by a former employee, they’re going to lose. This needs to stop, and the Milei administration knows this and is going to push for labor reform.

• The greater Bermuda snail, once thought to be extinct, is now thriving. After a few hundred were discovered in Bermuda’s capital city—likely the last of their species—conservationists bred and released 100,000 of them across the island, establishing six stable populations.

• Thanks to successful elimination efforts, fewer people need preventive treatment for neglected tropical diseases. According to the World Health Organization, around 1.4 billion people required large-scale distribution of preventive medicines in 2024, 92 million fewer than in 2023.

• The number of organ transplants in the US has increased nearly every year since 2013 (2020 was the exception), reaching a record 49,064 in 2025.

• In a large trial in Singapore, releasing male mosquitoes infected with Wolbachia bacteria—which prevents certain viruses from replicating and mosquito eggs from hatching—reduced dengue infections by roughly 70 percent.

• 82 percent of rural Indian households now have access to tap water, up from just 17 percent in 2019, representing over 125 million new tap water connections.

• A recently updated report from our managing editor Chelsea Follett and the economist Vincent Geloso finds that not only has global well-being improved substantially since 1990, but global inequality in well-being has also fallen across many metrics.

• Another analysis published in The Economist finds that global inequality in consumption spending is falling. In 2000, the richest 10 percent of humanity spent 40 times more than the poorest 50 percent. In 2025, they spent around 18 times more.

• The United States has made new trade commitments, including large bilateral trade agreements with India and Argentina, and has also extended a program that lets many sub-Saharan African countries export certain goods to the US duty-free.

• President Javier Milei has also been unilaterally lowering trade barriers. As a result of his actions, Argentine consumer goods imports were 55 percent higher in 2025 than the year before.

• Saudi Arabia’s Royal Natural Reserve is now home to endangered red-necked ostriches, a close relative of the native Arabian ostrich, which was driven to extinction in the early 20th century. The ostrich is the twelfth creature to be reintroduced to the reserve as part of a plan to reestablish 23 species in the country.

• China’s endangered Yangtze finless porpoise is recovering thanks to a fishing ban. The population is now estimated at 1,426 porpoises, up from 1,012 in 2017.

• Deforestation dropped 25 percent in Colombia: the country lost 36,280 hectares of forest during the first three quarters of 2025, down from 48,500 hectares during the same period the year before.

• Bogotá is becoming less smoggy. Thanks largely to improved infrastructure, the Colombian city’s air pollution fell 24 percent between 2018 and 2024.

• A study of the RTS,S malaria vaccine’s effectiveness in Ghana, Kenya, and Malawi found that vaccinated children suffered about 30 percent fewer malaria cases and 58 percent fewer severe cases than their unvaccinated peers.

• A large UK study monitoring 25,000 teenagers over three school years found no evidence that time spent on social media or video gaming led to increased anxiety or depression.

• Waymo says it now provides 400,000 robotaxi rides per week, up from 200,000 around this time last year. That number will likely grow even more this year, with the company planning to expand operations to more than 20 new cities.

• China has become the first country to issue commercial licenses for autonomous flying taxis.

• A new startup plans to sell a drone that autonomously monitors and herds cattle, potentially saving ranchers hundreds of thousands of dollars per year.

• India and the European Union have agreed to an enormous free trade deal, with both sides committing to cut or eliminate tariffs on over 95 percent of traded goods by value.

Conservation and biodiversity:

• According to recently published field research, polar bears living in the Svalbard archipelago have been getting fatter over the past few decades. This is especially interesting because sea ice around Svalbard is shrinking much faster than in other polar bear habitats, something widely expected to harm polar bear populations by shortening their seal-hunting season.

• An ambitious attempt to restore the Galápagos Island of Floreana to its pre-discovery state is making progress. The initiative aims to eradicate invasive rats, cats, and other non-native animals, rebuild native habitats, and reintroduce around a dozen locally extinct species, including giant tortoises. Conservationists report that native wildlife is already starting to rebound.

Natural disasters and pollution:

• Boyan Slat claims that his non-profit The Ocean Cleanup removed over 27,000 tons of plastic from the world’s waterways in 2025, which he estimates is 2 to 5 percent of annual plastic pollution. If the operation can maintain its current rate of growth, it could meet its goal “to clean up 90% of floating ocean plastic pollution by 2040.”

  

• As countries begin to develop economically, they tend to damage their environment. However, after reaching a certain level of wealth, the trend reverses, and they start to invest more in clean technology, conservation, and generally taking better care of the environment.

  

  This relationship, known as the Environmental Kuznets Curve, is becoming flatter thanks to the global diffusion of cleaner technology. The chart above shows how peak carbon intensity is falling over time, with poorer countries reducing their emissions per dollar of GDP at much lower income levels than earlier industrializers. The energy think tank Ember recently illustrated this trend by comparing India and China, the former of which is curbing coal use and electrifying its economy at a much lower level of development.

Health & Demographics

• The CDC reports that US life expectancy climbed to an all-time high of 79 years in 2024, finally surpassing its pre-Covid level.

• Researchers have published the full results of the largest randomized trial of AI cancer screening to date, comparing mammograms read by one radiologist assisted by AI with the standard two-radiologist review. The AI-supported process cut the radiologists’ workload by 44 percent and detected 29 percent more cancers, without additional false positives. Women who received a negative result during their AI-assisted mammogram ended up having 12 percent fewer cancer diagnoses before their next scheduled screening than those in the control group, suggesting that the AI screen missed fewer aggressive cancers.

• The Healthy Minds Study, a large survey of US college students’ mental health, shows some improvement between 2022 and 2025: the share reporting severe depression fell from 23 percent to 18 percent, anxiety from 37 percent to 32 percent, loneliness from 58 percent to 52 percent, and suicidal thoughts from 15 percent to 11 percent.

• Paleontologists have published their first comprehensive analysis of a giant fossil site in southern China containing the remains of a 512-million-year-old marine ecosystem. The team analyzed thousands of specimens from the site representing 153 species—nearly 60 percent of them new to science.

• Neuralink has now implanted its brain chip in 21 people with paralysis, allowing them to use digital tools like computers and cameras with their minds. According to a company blog post, some chip recipients can now operate a computer as fast or faster than the typical able-bodied user.

• Sometime next year, NASA plans to place the first radio telescope on the far side of the Moon. Far away from Earth’s atmosphere and protected from human radio interference, the instrument will be able to measure faint, low-frequency radio signals that are inaccessible from Earth, potentially leading to new discoveries about a wide range of cosmic phenomena.

• According to World Bank data, the middle class now outnumbers the poor in Mexico. The calculation is based on World Bank income thresholds for upper-middle-income countries.1

• Iraq’s national poverty rate has fallen from 23 percent to 17.5 percent over the past three years, according to government data.

• The International Monetary Fund’s global economic growth forecast has grown more optimistic, with the world economy now expected to expand 3.3 percent in 2026, up from an earlier prediction of 3.1 percent in October. The revision is based largely on a surge in AI-related investment.

Conservation and biodiversity:

• The much-diminished European water vole population is rebounding in the East of England after a program to cull the American Mink, one of the vole’s predators.

• Thailand’s tiger population is enjoying a robust recovery, thanks in part to a newly protected forest corridor that is allowing the cats to expand into new habitats.

• The Kākāpō, a critically endangered, flightless, owl-faced parrot from New Zealand, is expected to have a very fruitful mating season this year.

• China created 3.6 million hectares of forest and 4.9 million hectares of grasslands in 2025, as part of its decades-long effort to control desertification.

• Once common across eastern North America, the American chestnut was nearly wiped out in the early 20th century by an invasive tree fungus. Since the 1980s, scientists have been trying to restore the species by breeding and genetically engineering blight-tolerant trees. A recent field trial in Maine shows the project is bearing some fruit: American chestnut saplings given a gene from blight-resistant wheat developed much smaller blight cankers than both their non-engineered counterparts and the Chinese chestnut, which coevolved with the disease.

Energy and natural resources:

• People in Nigeria imported solar panels with a combined 1,721 MW of generation capacity between June 2024 and 2025—equal to 5 percent of the country’s total electricity demand. The panels are bringing electricity to large swaths of the Nigerian population who lack reliable access to the national grid.

• Tesla has begun operating a new lithium refinery that the company claims is the largest and most advanced in the United States.

• Japan has begun the world’s first deep-sea mud mining test in an attempt to reduce its dependence on Chinese rare earth minerals.

• US recycling firms are investing billions in automating recycling facilities, using AI-driven vision systems and high-speed sorting to pull valuable metals, plastics, and paper out of waste. According to reporting in The Wall Street Journal, the new technology is making recycling far more efficient and eliminating some unpleasant jobs.

Natural disasters and pollution:

• Not only has human microplastic exposure likely been overstated, but new research from the University of Vienna finds that previous estimates of atmospheric microplastic pollution may have been exaggerated by “several orders of magnitude.” By comparing real-world environmental samples with widely used models, the researchers found that modeled atmospheric microplastic levels were 100 to 10,000 times higher than what measurements actually showed.

• A century ago, pollution in Boston Harbor was so severe that shellfishing was banned, save for a handful of licensed, tightly regulated producers. Now, after decades of cleanup, the state of Massachusetts is opening parts of Boston Harbor to shellfish harvesting by the general public.

Health & Demographics

• Moderna and Merck have released the results of a Phase 2b trial of their mRNA cancer vaccine. In the trial, the vaccine combined with the immunotherapy drug Keytruda cut the risk of melanoma recurrence and deaths within 5 years by half compared with Keytruda alone.

• India’s malaria incidence has fallen over 80 percent since 2015, according to an announcement from the health minister, while tuberculosis incidence has fallen 21 percent.

• US overdose deaths continued to fall during the first half of 2025. The CDC reports that there were 73,000 overdose deaths between August 2024 and 2025, 21 percent fewer than in the previous 12 months.

• Maternal mortality in Uzbekistan has fallen nearly 80 percent since 1991, from 65 deaths per 100,000 live births to less than 15. Infant and child mortality fell by around 75 percent over the same period.

• The investment banking firm Jefferies has calculated that, if widespread use of GLP-1 weight loss drugs makes airline passengers about 10 percent lighter on average, the resulting fuel savings could boost US airlines’ earnings per share by as much as 4 percent.

Politics & Freedom

• Poland’s government has approved a bill offering “cohabitation contracts” for couples of any sex, which would give same-sex couples some of the legal rights and protections of marriage without the formal title.

Science & Technology

• Shai Wininger, the president of the Lemonade insurance company, has announced that the company will offer 50 percent lower per-mile premiums for Tesla drivers who use self-driving—a testament to the technology’s safety compared to human drivers.

• This year, Walmart plans to launch Wing drone delivery in an additional 150 locations across the United States, bringing the service to 12 percent of the population.

• Zipline, another drone courier, has now made over 2 million commercial deliveries.

• Blue Origin is planning to launch its own Starlink-style satellite internet network. Unlike Starlink, however, Blue Origin will not serve the everyday consumer market; its goal is to provide speeds of six terabits per second anywhere on Earth—useful for very large-scale data processing.

Violence & Coercion

• A report from the Council on Criminal Justice indicates that the US murder rate in 2025 may have been the lowest since 1900. The research uses police data from 35 large American cities to approximate the national murder rate.

Conservation and biodiversity:

• The critically endangered Lesser Antillean iguana is recovering after conservationists relocated some of the species’ last survivors to an island free of competing lizards.

• The endangered flat-headed cat has been spotted in Thailand for the first time in 30 years. Previously, scientists had suspected that the elusive feline was extinct in the country.

• Numbering just 384 individuals, the North Atlantic right whale is among the most vulnerable whale species in the world. Thankfully, its prospects may be improving; the population has grown about 7 percent since 2020, and scientists are reporting an unusually fruitful calving season this winter.

• Fishermen around Scotland are catching increasing numbers of flapper skate, suggesting that the endangered fish is recovering in the area.

Energy and natural resources:

• Amazon has struck a deal with Rio Tinto to supply US data centers with copper extracted by microorganisms. The company claims that the process, called bioleaching, produces pure copper from low-quality ore with far lower carbon emissions and water use than conventional smelting.

Natural disasters and pollution:

• For the first time in 25 years, there is no drought anywhere in California.

• Over the past few years, a number of widely publicized studies have made extreme claims about microplastic accumulation in the human body. But a recent investigation by The Guardian finds that much of the research is deeply flawed, with many reported detections likely driven by contamination and false positives. Critics say a commonly used detection method can mistake fats in human tissue for plastic, and that some studies report microplastic exposure that is simply “not biologically plausible.”

Food & Hunger:

• Hybrid rice, produced by crossing two genetically distinct parent varieties, typically produces much higher yields through a phenomenon called heterosis, or “hybrid vigor.” However, the benefit doesn’t extend to the next generation of seeds, which lose their yield advantage when replanted, forcing farmers to buy new seed every season. Scientists at the China National Rice Research Institute now claim they’ve solved that problem by creating hybrid rice that produces seeds that are genetically identical to itself, a long-sought breakthrough in rice breeding.

• The share of Rwandan children with stunted growth fell to 27 percent in 2025, down from 33 percent in 2020. Acute malnutrition declined from 8 percent to 6 percent over the same period.

Health & Demographics

• According to the annual report from the American Cancer Society, the five-year survival rate for US cancer patients has crossed 70 percent, the highest ever recorded. The report also estimates that improved cancer treatment has averted around 5 million premature deaths in the US since 1991.

• Stanford Medicine researchers have developed an AI model that can analyze sleep data to estimate a person’s future risk of more than 100 health conditions, including cancer, heart disease, and neurological disorders.

• The FDA has instructed Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk to remove suicide-risk warnings from their GLP-1 weight-loss drugs after concluding that the evidence doesn’t support the concern.

Science & Technology

• NASA is about to launch the first crewed mission in its Artemis program, which aims to return humans to the Moon and lay the groundwork for a long-term lunar presence. The upcoming mission will send four astronauts on a ten day journey around the Moon and back, marking humanity’s first crewed flight beyond low-Earth orbit in more than fifty years.

• Despite a communications blackout, Iranian dissidents were able to share footage of state violence online using thousands of illegal Starlink terminals. One researcher at Amnesty International said that almost every video they analyzed during the protests was uploaded by someone with access to Starlink.

• A Finnish startup is building glasses that automatically adjust your prescription based on what you’re looking at, using eye-tracking sensors and liquid crystals. They are marketing the device as a more flexible alternative to bifocal lenses.

Crime

• There were just 97 murders in London last year, the lowest number since 2014. The murder rate was the lowest since 1997.

• In 2025, New York City saw overall crime fall 3 percent, murders fall 20.2 percent, and robberies fall nearly 10 percent, according to the NYPD.

• State Police data show a sustained decline in New Jersey shootings and car thefts.

• The number of murders fell 32 percent last year in DC, and violent crime in general fell 29 percent, according to metropolitan police statistics.

Treatment of animals

• South Korea has banned bear bile farming, a cruel traditional practice that typically involves confining bears to tiny cages for their entire lives.

• The International Monetary Fund predicts that in 2026, for the first time in history, Sub-Saharan Africa’s economies will grow faster than Asia’s—about 4.4 percent compared with Asia’s 4.1 percent.

• In an op-ed in the Financial Times, Duvvuri Subbarao, the former governor of the Reserve Bank of India, argues that India may have graduated to a “higher growth trajectory” thanks in part to more responsible fiscal and monetary policy. • According to the World Health Organization, the number of people at risk of contracting trachoma, a bacterial eye infection, fell to 97 million in late 2025, down from 1.5 billion in 2002.

• A vaccine for Nipah virus, a highly deadly bat-borne disease with no existing treatments, has entered phase 2 clinical trials for the first time.

• Novo Nordisk is now selling the pill version of its weight loss drug Wegovy in the United States. The new medication is much cheaper than its injectable predecessor, potentially widening access to obesity treatment and putting downward price pressure on the weight-loss drug market.

• Researchers at Ovo Labs, a fertility biotech startup, say they’ve found a way to reduce chromosome errors in human eggs, a major cause of fertility issues for older women. After restoring a protein that helps chromosomes separate correctly, the team observed abnormal chromosomes in 29 percent of treated eggs compared to 53 percent in a control sample.

• OpenAI is launching a new health feature that lets people upload their medical records and other health data to ChatGPT, allowing the AI model to give more personalized medical advice.

Science & Technology

• According to its annual progress report, Starlink expanded to 35 additional countries in 2025 and added 4.6 million subscribers, more than doubling its customer base.

• Scientists have produced the first 3D images of Popocatépetl, a highly active volcano near Mexico City, revealing multiple magma pockets deep underground. The images give researchers a clearer view of the volcano’s structure and could eventually improve warnings for the millions of people living nearby.

• Billionaires Eric and Wendy Schmidt are funding four advanced telescopes, including a space observatory akin to Hubble and multiple ground-based facilities. The most ambitious part of the plan is the timeline: all four are meant to be operational within just four years.

• Utah has begun a pilot program to test whether artificial intelligence can safely renew medical prescriptions. The program is operated by Doctronic, a healthcare AI company that claims its system can perform the service faster, more cheaply, and just as responsibly as doctors.

• A recent meta-analysis of the effects of economic inequality on mental health found that economic inequality does not worsen our psychological well-being. After surveying 168 studies, the authors found a small negative correlation between economic inequality and mental health, but the relationship disappeared after adjusting for publication bias.

• There’s a common claim in progressive housing debates that deregulating real estate mainly produces luxury housing for the rich, with little benefit to average renters. The data show that to be false: according to CoStar, a real estate research company, US cities that allowed the most construction over the past 5 years also saw the largest declines in rent.

• Javier Milei’s deregulatory reforms are reviving stagnant industries in Argentina, including salmon farming, copper mining, and oil drilling.

• Local authorities in Japan’s Niigata prefecture have approved a plan to restart the nuclear power plant at Kashiwazaki-Kariwa, the world’s largest nuclear facility that was unwisely shut down after the Fukushima disaster in 2011.

• Pumped hydro, the oldest and most reliable form of large-scale energy storage, is still evolving. An article in Wired magazine describes several efforts to refine the technology, including a company that mixes dense particles into the water, increasing its mass and therefore the amount of potential energy it can store.

In a Gallup poll from last January, around one-fifth of Americans reported being satisfied with how things are going in the country. Just four percent were very satisfied.

It’s not a surprising finding for anyone who goes outside and talks to people. This Christmas, I attended a community potluck, a place where you might expect to find an unusually sociable and well-adjusted crowd. Snow was falling, the fire was crackling, children were frolicking, and still, the conversation turned intractably toward all that’s going wrong in the world (the main culprits at this New England gathering were identified as “a lack of empathy” and “artificial intelligence”).

That same poll, however, found that over 80 percent of Americans were satisfied with their own lives. Obviously, those results are in contradiction; a country cannot be doing that poorly if a supermajority of its citizens are having an excellent time. That contradiction is also a highly replicated psychological finding. Across developed countries, people are consistently pessimistic about the state of society in general, yet optimistic about their own lives.

Part of the gap is thanks to the media. News outlets compete for our attention by writing increasingly negative headlines, which are more likely to be clicked and shared on social media. Some is also due to human nature. The media is not conspiring against us, but simply indulging our innate preference for negative news and susceptibility to anecdotes over statistics, which tend to be more optimistic.

That last point is the reason for the list below, which contains 1,084 good news stories we collected in 2025. More precisely, it exists so that when people at your local potluck ask, “How can you be so optimistic? Don’t you read the news?”, you can refer them to a barrage of anecdotal evidence that the world is not, in fact, falling apart. I also urge you to scroll through it yourself; it will leave you calmer, more cheerful, and better informed.

• Over the past few years, Minnesota’s Twin Cities have run a real-world housing experiment. St. Paul instituted strict rent control that froze development and eventually forced the city to roll back the policy. Minneapolis loosened zoning instead, unleashing a surge of new apartments and keeping rent growth below both St. Paul’s and the national average.

• Recent research from Vanguard finds that AI does not yet seem to be having a strong effect on employment in the United States. According to their analysis, both wage and job growth were faster in AI-exposed industries than in the economy as a whole between mid-2023 and mid-2025.

• Thanks to sustained economic growth, household spending in India is moving from basic needs to more sophisticated goods. As a result of that growth, an increasing share of Indian households can afford durable consumer goods like cars, refrigerators, TVs, and mobile phones.

• India’s Parliament has passed a new law allowing private companies to build and operate nuclear reactors in the country, ending decades of tight state control over the industry.

• Thanks to decades of improving water quality, otters are making a comeback in the UK, turning up in rivers all over the country and even wandering into urban waterways and backyard ponds.

• Polar bears may be adapting to a warmer Arctic faster than expected. New research from the University of East Anglia found that polar bears in southeastern Greenland show shifts in gene activity linked to heat stress, metabolism, and ageing as temperatures rise, hinting at early genetic responses to climate change.

• A new report from the Energy & Climate Intelligence Unit, a UK-based think tank, finds that global economic growth is becoming increasingly decoupled from carbon emissions:

Between 2015 and 2023, countries representing more than 46% of global GDP absolutely decoupled — growing their economies while cutting CO2 emissions in absolute terms. That share is up from just over 38% in the pre-Paris period.

Food & Hunger:

• Despite a severe drought, farmers in Canada are achieving record crop yields thanks to improved agricultural technology like zero-till farming, better drainage, slow-release fertilizers, hardier cultivars, and more precise sensors and machines, suggesting that predictions from climate scientists that crop yields will decline this century are overly pessimistic.

Health & Demographics

• Brazil has cut mother-to-child HIV transmission to under 2 percent, meeting the WHO’s threshold for “elimination.”

• Taiwan has nearly achieved the WHO’s elimination targets for hepatitis C, with diagnosis and treatment rates of roughly 90 percent.

• Doctors Without Borders has administered the first full course of the R21 malaria vaccine in Ethiopia, vaccinating 2,100 children in a refugee camp. The organization reports that the camp hospital saw 50 percent fewer malaria deaths in the period after the campaign, which also included other malaria prevention methods.

Science & Technology

• Researchers from Nokia Bell Labs have figured out how to use seafloor telecom cables as earthquake detectors, using the existing fiber-optic network to record real seismic events. While the system isn’t yet used for routine monitoring or early warning, the proof-of-concept shows that today’s global cable network could double as a dense, low-cost sensor array for offshore earthquakes and tsunamis.

• Waymo’s robotaxis are known for being safe but excessively timid, often driving far more slowly and cautiously than humans. However, according to reporting in the Wall Street Journal, Waymo is now pushing its vehicles to be more assertive on the road.

• Walmart drone delivery has already begun in Atlanta and is coming to Orlando in early 2026.

• Argentina’s poverty rate has fallen to 36 percent in the third quarter of 2025, roughly 9 percentage points lower than the same period last year, amid slowing inflation.

• Ionic Mineral Technologies has discovered high concentrations of 16 critical minerals—including lithium, germanium, and cesium—in a clay deposit in Utah. The full extent of the find is unknown, but the company claims it could be “the most significant critical mineral reserve in the US.”

• The endangered Palau ground dove is showing signs of recovery on Ulong Island in the Pacific following a successful rat eradication.

• A recently published analysis of the ecological impacts of deep-sea mining found that, unsurprisingly, scraping off the first few centimeters of the seafloor sharply reduced animal life along the machine’s path. However, researchers found no evidence that sediment kicked up by the mining vehicle reduced overall animal abundance in the wider area—something many scientists had feared.

Health & Demographics

• In a late-stage trial, Eli Lilly’s experimental obesity drug retatrutide delivered some of the best weight-loss results ever seen. Patients on the highest dose lost nearly 29 percent of their body weight over 68 weeks. Across all treated participants, average weight loss was about 24 percent, appearing to outperform currently approved drugs like semaglutide and tirzepatide.

• The FDA has approved two new oral antibiotics to treat gonorrhea, the first new oral therapies for uncomplicated gonorrhea in decades. These new drugs are especially important because the bacteria that cause gonorrhea have been evolving resistance to most existing treatments.

• A new study strengthens the case that the shingles vaccine might lower dementia risk. By using an age-based rollout in Wales as a natural experiment, scientists found vaccinated elderly people were about 20 percent less likely to develop dementia over seven years than those just outside the eligibility cutoff.

This study examined Zostavax, a discontinued shingles vaccine, not the currently used Shingrix vaccine.

• The American Association for Cancer Research has a new report highlighting some incredible progress against pediatric cancer in the United States, including a roughly two-thirds decline in the death rate since the 1970s.

  

  

• According to CDC data compiled by Jeff Asher, deaths in the United States caused by homicides, traffic accidents, drug overdoses, and alcohol are all down significantly from their early-2020s peaks.

• Aurora Innovation, a self-driving truck company, is expanding its operations in Texas. In 2026, it plans to launch a fleet of autonomous trucks to haul sand used for oil and gas drilling around the Permian Basin.

• A startup called Overview Energy has completed a major engineering milestone for space-based solar power, successfully beaming energy from a moving aircraft to a ground receiver. The company plans to use the same method and similar hardware to transmit power from satellites in orbit.

• In many developing countries, Starlink provides much faster and more reliable internet connection than local providers. In at least five African countries—Ghana, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and Cape Verde—it is also cheaper than the leading provider.

• Despite trade tensions driven by the United States, forecasters now expect the global economy to grow 2.7 percent in 2025, beating some pessimistic forecasts from earlier this year. The sunnier predictions are based partly on falling energy prices and a robust 4.8 percent increase in global goods trade.

• A recently published survey from the IUCN counted 135,690 African forest elephants between 2016 and 2024, 16 percent more than the previous attempt (2006-2015). The increase is partly due to better detection—this time around, the researchers used DNA signatures in dung to track individual elephants—so it’s not clear whether it reflects a real recovery.

• Since 1949, China’s forest cover has grown from 10 percent of its land area to 25 percent, partly thanks to government efforts to halt desertification. The reforestation has been so extensive that it has altered the country’s water cycle.

• The Fen Orchid is no longer “under threat” in Britain after conservationists successfully restored the rare plant to multiple sites across the island.

• Wolves, bears, and boars are growing in number in Greece. A wildlife specialist referenced in the article credits milder winters and the falling popularity of hunting.

Energy and natural resources

• Zanskar Geothermal and Minerals, a geothermal energy company, has discovered a commercially viable geothermal reservoir in Nevada using an AI model that predicts the location of geothermal activity. The site had been entirely overlooked: it showed no surface signs of heat and had no history of exploration.

Natural disasters

• Zero hurricanes made landfall in the continental United States this year—the first time this has happened since 2015. And while hurricanes in the North Atlantic were 9 percent more intense this year compared to the 1991-2020 average, throughout the entire Northern Hemisphere, hurricane intensity was 19 percent lower than usual.

Health & Demographics

• Since 2022, Gavi, an international partnership that funds and supports vaccination programs, has helped increase the number of girls in low-income countries protected by the HPV vaccine nearly sevenfold—from 13 million to 86 million—saving around a million lives.

• Eswatini and Zambia have received their first doses of lenacapavir, which prevents HIV infection with just two yearly injections. The United States Department of State, Gilead Sciences, and the Global Fund have committed to providing at least 2 million doses to various HIV-afflicted countries by 2028.

• In Clemmons, North Carolina, Duke University researchers are sending defibrillators by drone to real 911 calls, the first program of its kind in the US. The drones’ median response time is 2 to 3 minutes faster than an ambulance, giving bystanders a chance to start lifesaving treatment sooner.

• Belite Bio may have developed the first treatment for Stargardt disease, a genetic disorder that causes vision loss in children. Its experimental pill slowed retinal damage by about 36 percent in a recent trial, offering the first real hope of delaying the condition, which currently has no cure.

• Okava Pharmaceuticals is developing a GLP-1 weight loss drug for obese cats.

Science & Technology

• NASA has recovered samples from the asteroid Bennu that contain ribose and glucose, simple sugars necessary for building basic biological molecules like RNA. The discovery adds to earlier findings from Bennu containing amino acids and other life-linked chemicals, strengthening the idea that asteroids may have delivered some of the ingredients of life to Earth.

• Agricultural drones are spreading worldwide, especially across East and Southeast Asia. They’re mainly used to spray agrochemicals—a job that, in many poorer countries, is still carried out by hand.

• According to the Associated Press, there have been just 17 mass killings in the United States so far this year, the lowest number in their record since 2006.
